TOMLAW RED SWARM Basketball Club Athlete Code of Conduct

Purpose of the Code:

The purpose of this code is to clearly explain the responsibilities and expectations that come with being a TOMLAW RED SWARM athlete. Listed below are a set of standards that apply equally to all of our athletes.

My Responsibilities as an athlete of the TOMLAW RED SWARM Basketball Club:

1. I will treat others with respect, politeness and courtesy. This includes my fellow athletes, my coaches, my parents, officials, volunteers and everyone else involved in the basketball community.

2. I will respect the property of others. This includes gymnasiums, hotels, equipment and any other facilities used over the course of the season.

3. I will represent TOMLAW RED SWARM Basketball with class and dignity.

4. I will strive to show sportsmanship in all situations. Sportsmanship is:

v     Always following the rules of the game both technically and in spirit.
v     Accepting all decisions made by the officials without any adverse reactions.
v     Accepting the decisions of your coaching staff.
v     Accepting victory with humility; accepting defeat with dignity.
v     Celebrating and encouraging your teammates.
v     Abstaining from any negative team talk, especially behind the backs of your coaches and teammates.
v     Competing to the best of your ability every time you step on the floor.
v     Abstaining from trash talk of any kind
v     Shaking hands in a professional manner with all parties involved (Opposing team, officials)    following the competition.

Attendance Policy

Attendance at all TOMLAW RED SWARM Basketball Club practices, competitions and team events are mandatory. 

Exceptions are as follows:

v     A medical excuse from the athlete’s attending physician/parent. Unless the physician/parent indicates otherwise, the athlete is excused from physical activity only, but is still required to attend the training sessions.
v     Unsafe weather conditions. Unsafe travel conditions will be based on the city road reports. Coaches will inform athletes of any cancellations.
v     Educational commitments. TOMLAW RED SWARM Basketball Club recognizes the importance of education and promotes the pursuit of academic excellence.

Coaches must be notified 24hrs in advance if an athlete is unable to attend a practice, game or club event for any of the reasons outlined above.

Consequences of Non-Attendance

Unexcused absences will result in:

1st Incident – phone call home to the parents from Coach to discuss 

2nd Incident – there will be a half game suspension

3rd Incident - there will be a 1 game suspension.

During any suspension, unless otherwise stated by coaches, athletes are required to attend any competitions or practices.

Consequences of Breaking This Code

1st time - A written warning describing what happened will be sent to the home of the athlete. A copy of this agreement will be included.

2nd time - Suspension from the next competition.


To the Athlete

I understand and will live by this athlete code of conduct while I am an active member of TOMLAW RED SWARM Basketball Club. I accept the consequences of breaking this code, recognizing that I am responsible for my actions.

To the Parent/Guardian

As a parent, I understand this code of conduct and the reasons for having one. I accept that the consequences of my child breaking these codes are fair and will be followed. I agree to support TOMLAW RED SWARM Basketball Club coaches and its members in implementing this code for the benefit of all athletes.
